The Des Moines Area Community College West Campus was proud to host its first annual Innovation Week. During iWeek 2010, students were exposed to a variety of speakers and presenters from across the United States and throughout Iowa. Sessions featured interactive workshops, seminars and activities focused on innovation and the value it adds to our lives.
The week culminated with a keynote presentation by Captain Alan Bean, Apollo 12 and Skylab 3 astronaut and the fourth man to walk on the Moon (see biography below). Before his presentation, we showed an APOLLO 12 MISSION VIDEO (CLICK HERE) that I created by compressing ten days of actual mission footage into about five minutes. The music for the video was written and produced by one of my students, Wesley McComb.
Below are a few photos from Alan's presentation (including a couple a shameless pics of myself both with Alan and while opening the event). Alan was also very gracious and agreed to sign our campus photo mural from Apollo 12 that Alan took while on the moon. The bottom three photos are additional and separate from the event (see descriptions). CLICK HERE TO SEE A TELEVISION INTERVIEW WITH ALAN. |

Alan Bean has enjoyed a fascinating career. He has served as an aeronautical engineer, naval aviator, astronaut, and is now an accomplished artist who has created paintings that record humankind’s first exploration of another world.
As Apollo 12 Lunar Module Pilot, Captain Bean became the fourth man to set foot on the moon. As Spacecraft Commander of the second Sky Lab Mission, he lived 59 days in space…270 miles above our planet earth. His crew accomplished 150 percent of their pre-mission goals, a record that has not been surpassed before or since. During his career as an astronaut, Captain Bean helped establish 11 world records in aeronautics and space.
For the past 28 years, Captain Bean has been a full-time professional artist. The transition has not been without significant thought and effort. Captain Bean vowed when he resigned from NASA, “I will not be an astronaut that paints, but will become an Artist that used to be an astronaut.” |
